Born with Amelia and Phocomelia, I use my feet for fine motor skill tasks, including my painting. Painting allows me new ways to express the layers of feelings that come with trying to live life meaningfully despite severe physical constraints. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art in 2000. There, I moved from oil painting using traditional methods to abstract mixed media on paper. Later, I moved back to oils but used the vibrant, non-representational style as well as an impressionistic style from my mixed media work on paper in my oils on canvas. Throughout my unique experience as an artist and male with no arms in a society geared to “handedness,” my emotional reaction to myself, my work, and my interactions with society has been strong and, at times, confusing for both others I encounter and myself. My art allows me to both reach out as well as explain some of those emotions
